When new cloud providers federations are established, a communication infrastructure to interconnect these providers according to a set of needs in a way to guarantee communication quality and security is an important point. However, due to the heterogeneous environment of the federated providers and communication infrastructure, there are no standardized models defining how to create/maintain this infrastructure ensuring networking performance and security aspects demanded by user’s applications.
Network federation will allow Fogbow to automatically create new virtual networks to support specific networking requirements and also isolate the communication capabilities of the providers instances according to the federation they belong to. This feature improves performance and security aspects of federated clouds communication, what facilitates the way software development professionals and cloud service providers need to create/support their systems. Startups, SMEs and IT vendors expected to use Fogbow will benefit of the easily and more accurate communication environment supported to develop new solutions
Fogbow currently relies on a simplified communication environment where all the federated elements are supposed to have Internet access through a proxy configured to translate the requests to the internal cloud provider instances. Because of this communication model, there is no guarantee for specific requirements necessary in the network level to support communication requirements from the applications. To allow Fogbow to solve network federation, a new model where on-demand virtual networks connecting federated resources to ensure that communication requirements are accomplished will be defined considering the capabilities provided by the providers as well as the constraints of virtual network and trustworthiness requirements when using untrusted third-party transit networks.
Network Federation is one of the new services provided by Fogbow to support communication performance and security requirements of ATMOSPHERE project. In a second moment, this mechanism is planned to also consider inter-site routing aspect to enhance communication capabilities.
This use case is associate to all other use cases, since it is a new service which will be implemented in Fogbow to improve federated infrastructure communication.
