As one of the key projects under the 4th EU-Brazil Coordinated Call of joint research projects and as the custodian of the EUBrazilCloudForum's legacy of organising the biannual Cloudscape Brazil conference, ATMOSPHERE is at the heart of European-Brazilian science diplomacy initiatives.
Science diplomacy is the use of scientific collaborations among nations to address common problems and to build constructive international partnerships. While this practice does not have a formal framework or standard method of being carried out in Europe, nonetheless, it has been a common practice of governments to undertake cross-border collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Cooperation between Brazil and European Union started in early 90's and after some partnerships during the following years, the coordinated calls in the field of ICT between Brazil and EU matured in 2010, with three coordinated calls concluded so far (2010, 2012 and 2015), and a 4th one being launched in 2016.
ATMOSPHERE is part of the 4th Coordinated Call which includes the following projects:
ATMOSPHERE is also synergised with the EUBrasilCloudFORUM, which has been tasked by the European Commission (EC) and Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI) to support the EU-Brazilian collaborative projects in the collection and promotion of their results and activities.
Between the European Union and Brazil, the goal is to eventually harmonize the European Digital Single Market with Brazil's vibrant ICT market. Easier said than done as there is a need to ensure policies, technologies, and skills are all in line. The Coordinated Calls play an important role in achieving this.
Cloud computing's importance to both markets has been recognised and to be able to take full advantage of the benefits of cloud computing and cloud-enabled applications, it is vital to ensure "trustworthiness" - the reliability, security, and high performance of cloud. This is what ATMOSPHERE aims to answer directly.
